Central PA, 2013 Banquet, EAS Grant

The Third Annual trip to Central Pennsylvania is going to once again take place on Memorial Day weekend. We will be calling the Feathered Hook in Coburn, PA our "Home Base". That means breakfast with Jonas every morning to start your day. If you have not met Jonus, Imagine a comedian cooking you breakfast while making you laugh so hard it hurts.

Last year the Fishing was amazing with great Sulphur Hatches on Spring Creek and the tail end of the Green Drakes. March Browns, Sulphurs and Stoneflies on the Little Juniata. This year we intend to spend at least a day on Penns Creek and Fishing Creek as well. There are many options in this region of PA from within walking distance to a 1 Hour drive, you can be on some of the best water in the country.

The 2nd Annual Western Reserve TU Banquet and Clam Bake was a success with fundraising, food and entertainment.
A huge Thank you to our sponsors for our Banquet and donations of Raffle items.

The First ever Ohio Embrace a Stream Grant was applied for and won by the Western Reserve Chapter of TU.  This Grant was being used in conjunction with the Chestnut Ridge Chapter or TU to Buffer the effects of Acid Mine Drainage in the Youghiogheny River Watershed.   Art Preiksa Treasurer and Jim Geary President visited the sites again on October 20th to collect water samples from Big Piney, Little Piney, and Glade Run above and below the  Alkaline Sand additions to test for PH and dissolved metals as well as Macro-invertebrates above and  below the sites where our chapter added the Alkaline Sand. 

In 2002, this stream had no Brook Trout living in its waters.  The Acid drainage from the mines in the area have been treated in multiple locations to buffer the Acid with Alkaline Sand AKA Pulverized Limestone rock which is a sand consistency with small pebbles.

2012 Penns Creek Memorial Day Weekend Trip

The Green Drake on Penns Creek, Fishing Creek,

Little Juniata, and Yellow Creek. Sulphurs on

Spring Creek, Penn's Creek and the Little J. March

 Browns, Gray Fox, ...Sulphurs, Caddis, Stones,

Etc... More bugs than you can imagine RSVP ASAP  only 5 Spots left.

 for 10 people and includes a full fly shop with the

 most exact fly patterns for the bugs you will see

each day.  Within a minute walk of the B&B, lies

Elk creek and Penns Creek.  Within a 25 minute

drive, you can be fishing Fly Fisherman's Paradise at

 Spring Creek or Benner Springs.  Fishing Creek at

the Narrows or the Lock Haven Seig center are 30

 minutes away.  The Little Juniata and Spruce

creek are 45-50 minutes away.  Yellow Creek near

Bedford or the Clarion near Ridgeway are great

 places to fish on the way there or on the way back

depending on whether you take the Northern

Route 80 or the Southern Route 76 (PA Turnpike).
